5G Infrastructure Statistics

A data-led look at 5G subscriptions, coverage, traffic, and fixed wireless access.

5G infrastructure statistics at a glance

5G infrastructure is moving from buildout to scale, and the numbers in the latest industry reports show how fast that shift is happening.

Across subscriptions, coverage, fixed wireless access, and traffic, the story is not just growth. It is the widening gap between markets that are already dense with 5G coverage and markets that are still expanding coverage, capacity, and usage together.

  • Ericsson projected global 5G subscriptions at 6.3 billion by 2030, which would equal 67% of all mobile subscriptions (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • Ericsson said 5G would become the dominant mobile access technology by subscription in 2027 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • 5G subscriptions were projected to account for 25% of all mobile subscriptions by end-2024 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • Global monthly mobile network data traffic reached 157 EB (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • GSMA said 305 operators in 121 markets had launched commercial 5G mobile services by December 2024 (The Mobile Economy 2025).
  • GSMA said 146 operators in 72 markets had launched 5G FWA services by December 2024 (The Mobile Economy 2025).
  • GSMA said 60 operators globally offered commercial 5G services on standalone networks as of December 2024 (The Mobile Economy 2025).

Subscriptions and adoption

The clearest signal in the latest data is that 5G is already broad-based.

Ericsson estimated 2.1 billion global 5G subscriptions in Q3 2024, with the year ending close to 2.3 billion (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). That means the installed base is no longer a niche layer at the edge of the market. It is becoming a central part of mobile usage.

The longer-range projection is even more important for infrastructure planning. Ericsson projected 6.3 billion 5G subscriptions by 2030, equal to 67% of all mobile subscriptions (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). In the same report, Ericsson said 5G would overtake other mobile access technologies by subscription in 2027, one year earlier than a prior forecast (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

That matters because infrastructure timelines are not driven only by device sales. They are driven by when subscriptions shift enough that operators must keep building capacity, extending coverage, and modernizing radio layers to match demand.

Coverage by region

Coverage is where the infrastructure story becomes region-specific.

Ericsson projected North America would reach 316 million 5G subscriptions by end-2024 and 436 million by 2030 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). It also said North America would reach 71% 5G share of all mobile subscriptions at end-2024, with around 90% total 5G coverage and 90% mid-band coverage by end-2024 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

That combination suggests a market where 5G is not just widely available. It is increasingly the default layer for mainstream usage.

Europe is also advancing, though the mix looks different. Ericsson said Europe’s total 5G population coverage would reach 80% by end-2024, while mid-band coverage would rise from around 30% at end-2023 to 45% by end-2024 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). Mid-band is especially relevant because it tends to support the balance of coverage and capacity that operators need in dense environments.

In India, Nepal, and Bhutan, Ericsson said the region would have over 270 million 5G subscriptions by end-2024 and around 970 million by 2030 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). It also projected 23% of total mobile subscriptions on 5G by end-2024, rising to 74% by 2030 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

What the coverage numbers say

The regional numbers show that infrastructure progress is not uniform.

North America is already deep into widespread 5G utilization, with high coverage and high subscription share (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). Europe is improving coverage, especially on mid-band, which usually matters for balancing speed and reach (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). Latin America and parts of Asia-Pacific are still earlier in the curve, with coverage percentages that leave much more room for buildout (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

The Middle East and Africa figure is the starkest of the group. Ericsson said the region would reach around 10% total 5G coverage by end-2024 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). That points to a very different infrastructure stage than North America or Europe.

Traffic and usage

Infrastructure is not only about where 5G is present. It is about what moves across the network once users and devices connect.

Ericsson said global mobile data traffic grew 21% between Q3 2023 and Q3 2024, and about 4% quarter-on-quarter between Q2 2024 and Q3 2024 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). It also said total monthly global mobile network data traffic reached 157 EB (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

That amount of traffic explains why spectrum use, mid-band buildout, backhaul, and network modernization remain central to infrastructure plans. A network can have broad coverage and still face pressure if traffic keeps rising at that pace.

Ericsson projected video traffic would account for 74% of all mobile data traffic at end-2024 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). It also said FWA data traffic would represent 25% of global mobile data traffic at end-2024 and could rise to 36% by end-2030, with FWA data traffic growing to around 170 EB per month by end-2030 (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

Traffic metrics to watch

  • 21% year-over-year mobile data traffic growth shows how quickly network load can expand (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • 157 EB per month gives a scale reference for global mobile network use (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • 74% video share at end-2024 means content mix continues to favor high-throughput applications (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • 170 EB per month of projected FWA traffic by end-2030 shows that fixed wireless is not a side channel anymore (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

Fixed wireless access

Fixed wireless access is one of the most useful infrastructure indicators because it connects mobile network buildout to home broadband demand.

Ericsson said 5G FWA connections in India reached nearly 3 million in just over a year since launch (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). It also said FWA CPE shipments would rise 23% in 2024 to 37 million units (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

GSMA added broader market context by saying 146 operators in 72 markets had launched 5G FWA services by December 2024, with 21 additional operators in 16 markets planning launches (The Mobile Economy 2025). GSMA also said 144 5G FWA networks existed at the end of December 2024, representing 48% of 5G mobile networks across 70 countries (The Mobile Economy 2025).

That is a substantial footprint. It shows that FWA has become a standard part of 5G infrastructure planning rather than a temporary experiment.

Pricing models and service design

Ericsson said 43% of FWA service providers offered speed-based tariff plans, up from 30% a year earlier, while 57% used volume-based tariff plans (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

That split matters because it shows providers are still refining how to package fixed wireless capacity for different customer types. The rapid rise in speed-based plans suggests growing confidence that networks can be sold on performance rather than only on volume limits (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

Ericsson also said Western Europe’s FWA adoption rose from 32% to 52% in the past year, and Middle East and Africa speed-based FWA plan adoption rose from 23% to 43% in the past year (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). Europe also accounted for 73% of all new 5G FWA launches globally in the past 12 months (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

Standalone 5G and network maturity

Standalone 5G is a useful maturity marker because it indicates operators have moved beyond partial 5G deployments into a more complete 5G architecture.

GSMA said 60 operators globally offered commercial 5G services on standalone networks as of December 2024 (The Mobile Economy 2025). That number is smaller than the total number of commercial 5G operators, which is expected. The key point is that standalone deployment has moved from concept stage into a measurable operating base.

For infrastructure analysts, that means the market now has multiple layers of maturity at once:

  • Broad commercial 5G launch coverage across markets (The Mobile Economy 2025).
  • Expanding 5G FWA deployments (The Mobile Economy 2025).
  • A smaller but meaningful standalone 5G operator base (The Mobile Economy 2025).
  • Rising traffic volumes that keep stressing network capacity (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

How to read the numbers together

The cleanest way to interpret the latest 5G infrastructure statistics is to treat them as three connected layers.

First, subscriptions tell you how many users have moved onto 5G-capable service plans or devices (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). Second, coverage tells you whether the network footprint can support that demand across populations and regions (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024). Third, traffic tells you how heavily that infrastructure is being used once people are on it (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).

Reading guide

  • Use subscription growth to measure adoption depth (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • Use coverage percentages to measure deployment reach (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • Use traffic growth and traffic mix to measure network pressure (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024).
  • Use FWA figures to measure how often mobile infrastructure is replacing fixed broadband access (Ericsson Mobility Report November 2024; The Mobile Economy 2025).
